is the music formation comprising sven pollkötter and jakob diehl. the sound is drums, guitar, piano/keys, voice and electronics,
but depending on the project it is reduced or extended by additional musicians.
'taumel' does not distinguish convention from experiment.
composition and concept stand side by side with free improvisation and chaos. opposites meet to form new creations and unities.
in several episodes, 'taumel' creates stylistically different music series, which develop independently from one another and appear album by album.
jakob and sven have been working as musicians for 20 years: sven as a percussionist and drummer, jakob as a composer and for the last 15 years also as an actor. accordingly, the musical, performative and production fields of both musicians/performers range from rock/pop music, classical music, neo-classical (new music or experimental music), concert, improvisation and theatre to radio play or film music. in their own studio, taumel have been developing music which moves between composition and improvisation, electronics and instruments and convention and experiment since 2016.
Jakob Diehl was born in Paris in 1978 and grew up in the South of France, Vienna, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Munich and Berlin. He first learned the violin, then the guitar, later piano and music theory, and studied composition with Mathias Hinke and at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin with Friedrich Goldmann. For almost 20 years Jakob Diehl has been working as a freelance composer of his own music, as well as composing for radio plays, theatre and film. Besides music, Jakob Diehl is also active as an actor in radio plays, theatre, TV and film. He is also active as a speaker and voice performer in the field of 'new music' and has performed with international orchestras and ensembles at various festivals in Germany and abroad. His own compositions range in format and instrumentation from solo instrument to orchestral and electronic music and have been performed by various ensembles and musicians at home and abroad. Through taumel, his diverse activities - composition, music for other media, instrumental play, radio play, theatre, film (video) and voice performance - all merge into one project for the first time. Jakob Diehl lives in the Netherlands since 2009.
Sven Pollkötter lives in Eastern Westphalia, Germany and studied drums at the Detmold University of Music with Peter Prommel. He played as a drummer in various bands, as well as Assignment, Alternative Allstars and Claus Grabke. Since 1999, he has been a freelancer with national and international ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt/Main, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, musica assoluta and the Theater Bielefeld. With the pianist Marc Awolin he has performed on the border of contemporary composition and improvised music and as a stage musician for dance and drama in various German cities. Since 2014 he has been leading his own percussion class at the Louis Spohr Music Academy in Kassel. Parallel to the creation of taumel, Sven Pollkötter studied music production/sound engineering at the Hofa College and built up his own music studio during this time by producing his music.
